DIY - a body scrub

Untitled #319
I love the Ocean Salt body scrub from LUSH. It not only smells amazing but can be used to scrub away dead skin cells AND as a shaving cream (only a thin layer is needed so as not to clog the razor). I decided to save some $$ this month (it is $35.99 for 8.8 ounces at LUSH) and tried making my own.

The ingredients are listed below. Cut the lime into wedges and soak in vodka overnight. Squeeze the vodka-soaked limes into a clean mixing bowl and add the salt and grapefruit. I added more vodka (the vodka that the limes were soaking in) to make it an appropriate liquid:salt ratio. Lastly, I added a scoop of coconut oil to thicken up the scrub (you can use olive oil instead, according to your preference). If you do use coconut oil, make sure to store at room temperature otherwise the coconut oil hardens on the top. I then blended everything in a food processor to make the salt more fine. Store product in a clean mason jar.

- Four limes ($2)
- 1/2 cup vodka ($20, from Costco for an entire bottle...depending on brand)
- Juice from 1/2 grapefruit (< $1)
- Salt ($1, from Big Lots)
- 1 small scoop of coconut oil ($5.99 for the jar)

I was definitely happy with the results. It smelled lovely and worked effectively to scrub away dead skin cells. Note: the DIY did not contain every ingredient that it is in the actual product (I had to google a lot of the ingredients as I had no idea what they were) and the DIY was not as green/blue in color as the actual product.

A great margarita recipe to make & enjoy (either while you are making the DIY scrub and/or after) and that use the same ingredients as our DIY, is the Pink Grapefruit Margarita from Barefoot Contessa

  1. That DIY body scrub sounds so fun! Who would've thought that vodka can be turned into something that helps you look beautiful? Hahaha! Anyway, I'm definitely trying that out. Thanks for sharing! All the best!
